Call for operator feedback on AS-to-org mapping tool (ASINT).
by Taejoong (tijay) Chung 22 Sep '25

22 Sep '25

Hello ZANOG. (Please excuse me if this message has been duplicated.) My name is Tijay Chung, and I am a researcher at Virginia Tech. Our team at Virginia Tech has been building *ASINT <https://asint.netsecurelab.org/>*, a research tool that *maps ASNs to their operating organizations* by combining Internet-routing metadata (WHOIS, PeeringDB, corp websites, M&A records, etc.) with large-language-model analysis. It is conceptually similar to CAIDA's AS2ORG, but with broader coverage. A use case is reducing false positives in BGP hijack detection by identifying when different origin ASNs actually belong to the same organization. *Please try it:* 1. AS search for AS 18733 (Microsoft and acquired ASNs): https://asint.netsecurelab.org/as-search/18733 2. Organization search for Deloitte (across multiple RIRs): https://asint.netsecurelab.org/org-search?q=deloitte *Why this might help:* Systems like Cloudflare Radar flag anomalies when the origin ASN does not match ROAs. Many of these are not hijacks but legitimate internal re-announcements between sibling ASNs. In our dataset of 17,282 such alerts (Jan 2023–Jul 2024), ASINT identified 1,621 cases (~9.4%) as likely intra-org. We sampled 100 of these and contacted operators; all 32 who replied confirmed they were internal, not hijacks. *What we need from you:* 1. Please check your org and ASNs. If you see a correct mapping, click the thumbs-up. If you see an error or a missing ASN, click the thumbs-down. After that, a short comment box appears. Any details you can share are valuable: correct legal entity name, subsidiaries, brand vs legal names, recent M&A, reseller or DDoS-scrubbing scenarios, multi-tenant NOCs, government or university structures, region-specific business units, joint ventures, or anything else that explains why two ASNs should or should not be grouped. 2. Expect errors. We know there are two classes: - False positives: we group ASNs under the same organization even though they are different. - Misses: we fail to group sibling ASNs that should be together. *If you spot either, please rate and leave a comment. We will feed your comments into the next LLM pipeline cycle to correct mappings and tune extraction rules.* 3. Any feedback is welcome: data sources we should incorporate, edge cases that keep biting you, risk of over-merges vs under-merges, UI issues, or better ways to present evidence. If you prefer email, reply here or write to our team: tijay(a)vt.edu, yongzhe(a)vt.edu, weitongli(a)vt.edu We aim to complement, not replace, existing datasets and community curation. If you maintain ground-truth lists for your org and are willing to share pointers, that helps everyone. If this is useful, we will report a summary of corrections learned from the community and continue iterating. Thanks for taking a look and for any time you can spare. Thanks, Tijay Chung, Associate Professor Virginia Tech | Computer Science 220 Gilbert Street, Suite 4303 Blacksburg, VA 24060 (540) 231-0667| tijay(a)vt.edu

Hi Seun I will publish it all and how the team came to that final slate. I will also include the external pressure and attempted interference that we faced with the team yet the NOMCOM is supposed to be an independent committee which even an Afrinic CEO or Internal legal office must never attempt to manipulate. Like I have indicated, it's going to be an interesting case study and a great comparison for the future. So if they did not have much time, according to a timeline they already set, we have to live with that? Brilliant bro ! Well The 2022 Board Election which were stopped through a court order. While reading that affidavit, there were a number of complaints and one of them was that; the NOMCOM for which I was Chair, had slated only one Candidate for the North African Seat. That Candidate was Prof.Habib. I will make be publishing the same at different forums to form part of an interesting case study. ---- I mean - it's a very vague statement that is highly subjective, and doesn't really contain any objective statements that can be evaluated by anyone. It's the same as saying Mars really has issues..... Andrew ---- For reasons that may or may not be self-evident I am not commenting on the legality of the upcoming election nor what flows from potential hiccups that arise. I wish the candidates luck, and can say I am impressed with most of the slate which is advanced as a community candidate list - there are some very good people on that list and at least one candidate not on the list who is certainly fit and proper. But Andrew's comment can't go without a bit of a chime in. There is at least one issue which Mars doesn't have which Africa does and unless you can get a means to transport that problem from Tanzania to Mars I am afraid that Mars despite having a bad atmosphere has at least one major issue less than than Africa. ;) On Wed, 10 Sept 2025 at 10:16, <zanog-discuss-request(a)lists.nog.net.za> wrote: > Send zanog-discuss mailing list submissions to > zanog-discuss(a)lists.nog.net.za > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via email, send a message with subject or > body 'help' to > zanog-discuss-request(a)lists.nog.net.za > > You can reach the person managing the list at > zanog-discuss-owner(a)lists.nog.net.za > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of zanog-discuss digest..."Today's Topics: > > 1. ISPA press release: AFRINIC online voting kicks off, ISPA makes recommendations
by Elaine Zinn 10 Sep '25

10 Sep '25

Dear ZANOG members Please find a press release issued by ISPA for your information. Kind regards Elaine elaine(a)ispa.org.za <mailto:elaine@ispa.org.za> secretariat(a)ispa.org.za <mailto:secretariat@ispa.org.za> Tel: +27 83 327 4806 PRESS RELEASE BY ISPA 10 September 2025 ONLINE VOTING FOR NEW AFRINIC BOARD SET FROM 10-12 SEPTEMBER ISPA, SA's official internet Industry Representative Body (IRB), is reminding members of AFRINIC (The African Network Information Centre) that online voting for the organisation's new Board opens today and urges them to vote for specific, worthy candidates. Online voting for the all-important Board of Africa's Regional Internet Registry (RIR) is scheduled to run from 10 to 12 September 2025 (there will be no in-person voting). AFRINIC has been without a functioning Board for three years. An attempt to hold an election earlier this year was annulled after allegations of voting fraud were raised by numerous resource members. "It is crucial for competent persons to take control of AFRINIC and steer it to a new, drama-free future centred on technical proficiency and wise decision-making, always with the African internet community and end users top of mind," says Sasha Booth-Beharilal, ISPA Chair. While ISPA has traditionally refrained historically from making specific AFRINIC voting recommendations, the unusual nature of the recent elections means ISPA is forced to recommend voting for a capable set of candidates for the good of the African internet. ISPA is pleased that all of the candidates it supported in the previous (annulled) election are standing again. After consultation with other stakeholders, colleagues and industry associations, ISPA's Board strongly encourages all AFRINIC resource members to vote for the following list of candidates: Seat one: North Africa Candidate: Abdelaziz Hilali Seat two: West Africa Candidate: Emmanuel Adewale Adedokun Seat three: Indian Ocean Candidate: Kaleem Usmani Seat four: Central Africa Candidate: Ntumba Kayemba Laurent Seat five: Southern Africa Candidate: Carla Sanderson Seat six: Eastern Africa Candidate: Fiona Asonga Seat seven: Region Independent Candidates: Benjamin Mark Roberts Seat eight: Region Independent Candidates: Ajao Adewole David While noting that there are other nominees who are also well-qualified to serve on AFRINIC's Board, ISPA believes that voting for this particular slate of candidates will assure the highest chance of success in the AFRINIC elections. ISPA remains committed to supporting its members in maintaining the security and integrity of their network resources. Visit the AFRINIC elections website [https://elections.afrinic.net/] for more information. Alternatively, should you require additional clarification, please contact secretariat(a)ispa.org.za <mailto:secretariat@ispa.org.za> . ENDS/
