Right - rebooted the router, got assigned a different IP address.

Down to <4 ms through jinx.

I'm thinking that last time an IP was acquired, it was through something in
Cape Town or something - maybe loadshedding.

anyways - thanks

This would be my suggestion too. Speak to your ISP.

The only way to make sense of this woudl be to talk to MTN, if that is even
possible.

This is the kind of stuff I'm seeing.

So - like 40ms to jinx.

Can't get anywhere in under 19.

makes zero sense to me.

I'm on Openserve GPON at home currently. My traceroute gets to my

local IXP in about 4 ms, 7 ms if I'm on my wifi.

On the SADV network we normally see between 2 and 10 ms for the

backhaul within 100 km of the core PoP. We only see 1 ms for the GPON

leg of the link.

I'd say 5-10 ms is quite realistic for and end customer in a metro

area up to the ISPs core.

Propagation delays will typically affect services in smaller towns as

everything currently tends to aggregate back to one of the 3 big

metros. Around 30ms depending on which route the traffic takes around

the country.

~20 ms could mean that your traffic is crossing the country to reach

that router.

These are reasonably practical comments.

If your access service is coming off a DWDM network in a Metro area

where the fibre backbone and your last mile access link is within 100km,

a nominal latency of 1ms - 3ms between you and the 1st IP hop is not

unreasonable.

If your service is coming off a GPON network, that could be anywhere

between 10ms - 20ms within a 100km radius.

If your service is coming off an Active-E network, that could be

anywhere between 2ms - 5ms within a 100km radius.

Don't get me started if it's ADSL.

Mark.
